Can I Eat Sugar and Lose Weight?

I love sweets (My Dad used to call me "Goody"), which are sometimes hard for me to resist. I especially like homemade, high-fat ice cream.  After one taste of delicious ice cream, I usually want to eat a lot more.  I also love home-baked cookies and cakes fresh from the oven. It can be challenging to stop eating something just-baked and "yummy."

However, an out-of-control sugar habit can quickly cause weight gain.  Sugar stimulates the brain's dopamine centers.  Dopamine is a "feel-good" hormone, and eating sugary foods often causes us to want to eat more sweets because of that dopamine hit.

Sugary desserts are designed to make us want to eat them.  And frequently, the more we eat, the more we want.

Am I suggesting that you never eat anything with sugar? Not at all.  However, it is important to limit your sugar intake for your health.  Next week's post will discuss how you can enjoy sugar in moderation. Meanwhile, this week, pay attention to how much sugar you eat daily and look for ways to decrease the sugar in your diet.
