Why would you choose not to feel good?

May 25, 2022

Most of the time I'm pretty happy.  But, I'm not happy all of the time. Life isn't always terrific, and I really would not want everything to be wonderful all of the time.

No one is always happy. There are times when we don’t want to be happy – such as when someone we love dies, or an important relationship ends, or when we hear some terrible news. The week's senseless killing of all of those young children in Texas makes me both sad - and horrified. The state of the economy is another area about which many of us are feeling both worried and unhappy.

Negative emotions – those emotions (or feelings) such as sadness, sorrow, fear, unhappiness - are part of life.  We feel negative emotions about half of the time. We really appreciate when we feel  positive feelings because of their marked contrast with our negative feelings.

Many of us try to avoid feeling negative emotions by buffering – doing things like eating, or drinking alcohol, or on-line shopping.  Buffers are "false pleasures".  They only make us feel better temporarily.  When we avoid feeling negative emotions, we don’t allow ourselves to process them – and those negative emotions then tend to recur.

Feeling negative emotions is uncomfortable; however, those negative feelings cannot hurt us.  By learning to feel all of our feelings – both the good and the bad ones – we are less likely to buffer to avoid feeling those feelings.  And we experience more of life - the difficult, sad, happy, and fulfilling parts.  Our lives are richer when we allow ourselves to feel all of the emotions - even the ones that make us uncomfortable. When we learn to experience all of our emotions, and not buffer to avoid them, we experience more authentic lives and can become the women we desire ourselves to be.

When you learn how to feel and process your emotions, you will have less need to eat as a way to buffer those negative emotions.  I can help you to learn to feel those negative emotions so that you can decrease your buffering with food.
